PARAPROSDOKIAN:
Have you heard of this word, well if didn’t here’s what it means.
A paraprosdokian is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reinterpret the first part. It is frequently used for humorous or dramatic effect. Some paraprosdokian not only change the meaning of an early phrase, but they also play the double meaning of a particular word.
Below are some of my favorite paraprosdokian:
· He had a photographic memory; although it was never developed.
· If I could just say a few words… I'd be a better public speaker.
· I sleep eight hours a day and at least ten at night.
· On the other hand, you have different fingers
You all must be wondering why I am writing about this in particular.
Well, you see ever since the pandemic I have been paying more attention to the phrases I read or a new words that I learn and that’s not because of the pandemic but it’s because I finally started this blog “THE SKY OF MUSING”. To be honest everything I write in this blog comes straight from the heart (that’s why there is usually a lot of typos because I am so engrossed In pouring out my feeling I forget to proofread my blogs) and so I have always really expressed myself in simple day to day used words but now that I have started to read more attentively than I usually did it turns out that I am indeed a logophile/lexiphile (Lover of words.)
I am amazed by how much a single word can express or how a word could change the meaning of a sentence by placing at different places. I remember my dad always telling me to read the newspapers. If only I had listened to him earlier I would have found this about me way before than I did. Why I say this is cause I was so content on disobeying (rather punishing) my dad for things he didn’t know he committed in a way that he would never be offended. I know it’s very silly now that I think of it but to provide a rationale for I was only 14 and that’s all I thought I could do to retaliate against the man. Now I reckon this as a tragedian foolish me.
The newspaper is composed mostly of words. A brief survey gives me a rough estimate that a paper similar to the Hindus contains about 90,000 words per edition per day.
Obviously, the number will vary according to the number of pages and graphics included in each edition. Also, many words are repeated multiple times, but still roughly 90,000 per day, every day means that I can say there is a “veritable plethora” of words in the newspaper.
“The time for action is now. It’s never too late to do something”
I sometimes feel sad about how I missed so much, but really only sometimes cause now I know that It’s never too late and I am never ever going to be too old to learn .After all I did figure out that I am and will always be a “lover of words”, and how grateful I’m to have found the word "Psithurism", this word doesn’t describe precious or love or feelings but it is used to describe the sound of the wind through the trees and for some unknown reason I love it.
