today I decided to cheat post, not anything like the sky of musing but something I hope everyone knows so as you have guessed it is about moving places.
Let’s face it - unless you are a minimalist, shifting is not an easy task and it is definitely overwhelming. Believe me when I say I am not even close to a minimalist. I have shifted to nine different houses over the course of 18 months now and everyone who knows me always ask me how I do it. I have always replied with the same response "Let’s not go there". Now that I have done it so many times I guess my experience and insights may as well help someone.
So I decided to write down a few tips that I follow every time I shift, to be honest having stayed on my own from early ages did teach me a lot and all you lucky people who didn’t , here’s your chance at a lesson that you can learn without having to make all the mistakes that I made, trust me it will make your life easier strike that cause these tips will make your life void of all the misery one can find themselves in when you start to declutter for the move.
Here are 10 tips.
#1 Get organized early
Avoid leaving anything until the last minute. Unless you have to pack up and leave in a hurry, chances are you have between 10 and 15 days to make a plan and ensure that moving day runs smoothly. Create a countdown list and itemize everything you need to accomplish every three days.
#2 Figure out your move strategy
How are you going to get from point A to point B on moving day? For shorter moves, you'll either need to assemble some very nice friends with vehicle or consider renting a truck for the day. if you are shifting cities (longer move) try movers and packers.
#3 Seize the opportunity to purge
Moving is a great chance to organize your belongings and get rid of items you no longer use. Take the time to sort and donate gently worn clothing and also utensils, leave behind furniture (mostly tables chairs , bedding --> this applies in case of longer moves only, anyway you will be planning on getting new things), recycle old magazines and catalogues and shred old documents(this helps a lot, the shredding of old **not important document the best part of the purge).
#4 Put together a packing kit
If more than one person is packing meaning you just have good friends, just kidding, we all have good friends, stay organized by establishing a system. Have blank inventory sheets prepared so one person can tackle each area or room. Arm each packer with a pen, black marker, and packing materials, like newspaper, a packing tape dispenser and boxes.
#5 Reuse boxes
You need a few cardboard boxes to round out your moving kit. A few weeks before you start packing, grab a few each time you visit the grocery store. One thing you should always keep in mind--> that smaller boxes are easier to carry when facing stairs and narrow pathways.
#6 Label every****ingthing
Label all sides of the box (avoid the top). Whoever is carrying in your boxes might not make sure all labels are facing one way for your easy retrieval. Try labeling each side in marker so you can easily find what you need in a stack. So far simple right.
#7 Find out the rule.
Why this is important is that you don’t want your move in to be a hassle for the people already there, that would give you a hard time on the long run trust me you don’t want that.
#8 Protect your valuables
Find a safe place to store your valuables on moving day. Insure anything that’s valuable or breakable if you’re using a moving company. And if you’re moving a computer, do a quick backup of important files just in case something happens, expect the unexpected.
#9 Make nice with your new neighbors
Start off on the right foot by informing your immediate neighbors that you’ll be moving in.
10 Treat your movers
Whether hired movers or friends and family, be sure to have food and drinks readily available for everyone.
Most of the tips are what I had found in 2013, when i was first moving out of my 14 years home Kurseong to Kolkata for my higher secondary. You must think aren’t kids in India a little too reliable on their parents. That must be in cases you have seen or heard so far but not me cause I got parents with a huge sense of AATMANIRBHAR and obviously they know responsibility can’t be spoon feed, and I am forever grateful.
Hope this post will be of help to you when you move. Happy moving.
